What are the Advantages of Spread Betting on the MT4 Platform?

MT4 is the most popular trading platform in Forex trading. Developed by MetaQuotes Software and released in 2005, the MT4 platform is a desktop and mobile trading platform suitable for individual traders.

The main advantages of using the MT4 platform are that it offers greater flexibility, charting and customization for traders then other trading platform. For example, if you want to use or develop your own EAs (Export Advisors) or custom indicators then you can hire an MQL4 coder to do this.

Secondly, the MT4 trading platform is free to download from the MetaTrader4.com website and is usually provided for free by brokers with a live or demo trading account. For example, both FXCM and Alpari offer MT4 trading with a demo account of up to £50,000.

While it may not be the simplest platform for beginners to use, MT4 offers advanced charting and features that aren’t offered elsewhere. If you’re completely new to spread betting than you might want to use a web-based platform at City Index or ETX Capital to start out with. Or you can look at our MT4 tutorials and lessons.

Finally, if you’re undecided on which platform you want to use then we recommend registering with ETX Capital. They offer a minimum trade size of 50p per point and you can start out on the ETX Trader web-based platform and then move on to the ETX MT4 platform when you’re ready.

Are there any Downsides to using the MT4 Platform for Spread Betting?

Yes. In the past, there have been several complaints of latency issues for spread betting on the MT4, especially with Alpari. You can see some of the complaints at the BabyPips.com forums here. Secondly, many spread betting firms platforms are now so advanced that unless you’re using EAs then you’ll pretty much find everything you need on the broker’s own web-based platforms.
